無駄ない合理的な構造と機能性を追求

デザイナーのヨーエン・ベックマークは4代目最後の企画デザイン担当責任者として、他の前任者と比べ一番長い9年間つとめていました。ベックマークがつとめていたFDBモブラーの後期には、アメリカを中心にデンマークの家具に人気が出てきており、ベックマークは輸出を見越して、スティック状で安価であり、小さく梱包し組み立てれるチェアの開発をよくしていました。 その代表作品はJ108ですが、彼はそうした輸出を目的とした組み立て家具とはJ80とJ81の両方を完全に別の方向性で開発しました。

包み込むような柔らかな座り心地

J80がこれまでのチェアと大きく違う点は木部が非常に細く、モーエンセンが採用して以来、ヴォルタとヨハンソンの採用することのなかったペーパーコードを座面に用いたことです。 また蒸気でひねりを加えたオークの背はJ80の為に開発されました。 それらを採用することで従来より大きさの割に軽く、柔らかい座り心地と快適な背を実現しました。

日本が江戸時代後期であった1866年、デンマークでは一般の人々が日常に不可欠な食品をより最適に入手出来る よう、地域神父クリスチャン・ソンネが流通の仕組みを構築し、FDB の前身となる協同組合を結成しました。

その後、デンマークのユトランド半島で日常生活協会を統括していたセブリン・ヨーエンセンは、ソンネが発足 したような仕組みを持つ様々な分野の協同組合を一つに束ね、1896 年1 月1 日にFDB＝デンマーク生活協同組合 連合会を設立しました。そして1942年にインテリア事業の角度から消費者の生活水準向上を目指し、FDB 内に 家具部門が組織化されFDB モブラーは誕生しました。

「丈夫で、美しく、機能的、そして手軽な価格」という当時としては画期的で過酷な開発条件のもと、妥協のない 商品開発と職人たちの巧みな技術力、北欧の歴史や地勢によって育まれた文化、その全てが必然性を持って混ざり 合い生まれたFDB モブラーの家具は、デンマーク国民の暮らしをより豊かなものへと変え、それはまた人々の 美意識をも向上させることに繋がりました。

デンマーク近代家具の父と称されるコーア・クリントに師事したボーエ・モーエンセンがFDB モブラーの初代 企画デザイン担当責任者に就任し、ポール・M・ヴォルタが2 代目を務めました。ハンス・J・ウェグナーなど 名だたるデザイナーがプロジェクトメンバーに名を連ね、数々の名作を世に送り出し、それらはその後に生まれた デンマーク家具の模範となり、今日目にする数々のデンマークデザインが生まれたのです。
