My relationship with the chair

Hello, this is Yano from Greenwich Daikanyama.

Today I would like to write about chairs, a common piece of furniture, and their relationship with people.

We will explore the relationship between chairs and people, including stories of customers who have purchased our chairs, as well as stories of staff working at our Daikanyama store.

First, let me tell you a story about a chair that happened to a customer who visited our Daikanyama store the other day.

A customer was looking intently at a vintage chair. When I spoke to her, she told me, "My children have left home, so I'm looking for a favorite chair for myself."

He came across our vintage Scandinavian chair while passing by. He saw it through the window and thought, "This is close to the chair I had in mind," and came in.

After touching, sitting and looking at the chair, the customer made the purchase with a very happy look on his face, saying, "I'll buy this chair. I've been looking for this chair for a long time, but I'm glad I found a great one and it was worth the wait."

Now that you have some time and space to yourself after raising your children, you may have imagined yourself sitting back and enjoying your hobbies or spending time with family and friends.

As I watched that person's happy back as he left, I thought to myself that a chair is not just a tool to sit on, but an item that accompanies you through life.

I hope that this chair will be a catalyst for them to enjoy their second life.

Chairs can be purchased individually, making them an item that is easier to reflect personal tastes and preferences than sofas or tables that are shared by the whole family.

Furthermore, don't you think it would be easy to take a monopod with you if your living environment changes, such as when you move?

Of all the furniture, it may be that chair is the one that you will have the longest relationship with.

If that's the case, you want to choose something that you truly feel is good.

So today we asked the staff at Greenwich Daikanyama, who are particular about chairs, what motivated them to purchase chairs and how their feelings changed after purchasing them .

Fukuda: The chair that I have purchased that has made the biggest impression on me is Poul Kjaerholm's PK-0.

Q1. What motivated you to purchase it?

Fukuda: I've been longing for one since I was a student. At first, I only had the image of it being a cool, stylish chair, but as I researched it, I was captivated by the high level of design of the PK-0, and when I found out it was in stock in Japan, I took the plunge and bought it.

Q2. What did you think when you actually purchased it?

Fukuda: Just looking at it makes me happy (laughs). Having this chair makes me want to keep my room clean and create interior decor that matches it, so I'm glad I took the plunge and bought it.

I see. So by purchasing the chair you had always wanted, your mood has changed for the better. ( I have introduced the room where the PK-0 is placed in my previous blog , so please take a look if you are interested.)

Next, ask the other staff members who also have chairs they would like to purchase.

Q1. What kind of chair are you thinking of buying?

Saotome: Mine is the Safari Chair by Kaare Klint. It's the chair that got me interested in Scandinavian furniture. I love the functionality of the knock-down mechanism and the design of the leather arms.

Aoyama: I like the Kaare Klint Forbaugh chair. The curves of the back legs are beautiful, and I think the rattan design will fit in well with Japanese houses. It's also light, so you can carry it anywhere you want.

Q2. How would you like to spend your time if you had that chair?

Satsukime: I want to sit in a safari chair, look at pictures of safari chairs, and enjoy the feeling of superiority of "I'm sitting in a nice chair" (laughs).

Aoyama: My relatives' houses are traditional houses with Japanese gardens, and I think it would be lovely to have them on the veranda. I would like to give them to my uncle and aunt as presents so that they can spend their time relaxing while looking at the garden.

Both chairs are by Kaare Klint, known as the "father of Danish modern design." You have a wonderful concept (fantasy), but do you think the chairs will create a new "place" for you and increase your enjoyment?

Next, we asked our staff, who are fans of vintage Scandinavian furniture, to tell us about their favorite chairs.

Shibuya: When I got married, I needed a dining chair, and I wanted something that would last a long time, so I bought Kai Christiansen No. 32 .

I use it not only for meals, but also for reading books and enjoying alcohol. It's a vintage chair that's over 50 years old. I'd like to age with it and enjoy the changes it undergoes over time.

More than 50 years is amazing. The Danish philosophy of "using good things for a long time" is evident in the chair. I hope people will continue to enjoy the changes that occur over time.

Finally, let me introduce you to a chair that I'm interested in.

Since I started working at Greenwich, my favorite chair is the J82 by Joen Beckmark. I am completely captivated by the enveloping comfort of the chair.

The thin and delicate spoke design allows the piece to feel light despite its size. Adding cushions and blankets to give it a seasonal feel will also invite the enjoyment of changing up your interior decor.

What did you think? This time, I wrote a blog on the theme of "the relationship between chairs and people." I hope that you can feel closer to chairs.

At our Daikanyama store, we display Nordic chairs, including FDB Møbler, so if you're in the area, please come and visit us.

We will soon be stocking vintage Scandinavian furniture.

All our staff are looking forward to seeing you.
