Learning from the Nordic lifestyle: the appeal of gathering spaces

As social gatherings are gradually returning, many people have felt even more joyful being able to meet up with family and close friends for the first time in a long time.
"People coming together and sharing the same time and place " has long been cherished by the people of Northern Europe and is an essential element in leading a rich daily life.

This time, we will consider the importance of creating spaces where people can gather through Nordic lifestyles and ways of thinking.

What "gathering" means to people in Northern Europe

Denmark is known as the "happy country."
For them, "people coming together" is an essential element in leading a rich life .

For example, the daily lives of Danish people can be described by the word "Small Gathering," which means "a gathering with family or close friends."

They find richness in inviting people to their homes on a daily basis and spending relaxing time with family and friends in a "summer house" surrounded by nature. "Hygge," which represents a comfortable space or time, also contains the meaning of "connecting with people," such as "doing something together" or "sharing an experience together."

Spending each day interacting with others leads to a richer life. For the Danish people, now as in the past, "gathering" is an important part of life.

Is co-living the new luxury?

According to SPACE10, a research and design institute founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, the number of spaces for communal living (shared living) has been increasing around the world in recent years.

This is due to the fact that it is seen as a means to solve the problems of "global population growth" and "depletion of natural resources" that will occur in the near future, as well as the growing interest in "living together."

While a large number of housing units are being supplied to meet the population growth, there is a problem of little connection between neighbors, especially in large cities. Population growth has not led to an increase in people's interactions or relationships, and instead, more and more people are feeling lonely.

The importance of community is being reevaluated . Instead of living alone or living in a suburban mansion, which were once considered "a form of luxury," communal living is attracting attention worldwide as the "new luxury."

A Danish company creates a place for everyone to gather

This unique facility, called "Everyone's Gathering Place," has been created by Flying Tiger Copenhagen, a Danish general goods store that is well known in Japan.

They bought closed churches and hotels and are hosting various programs every day, such as yoga and dance. One of the most distinctive features is the daily dinner party.
Compared to other restaurants in Denmark, you can eat at a bargain price, and everyone from families with children, students, business people, middle-aged people to the elderly gather at this restaurant. It is a place where strangers can enjoy casual conversation around the table and make new acquaintances.

CEO Lennart Lajboschitz describes this “gathering place” as “a place that will give people the opportunity to build relationships and start something new,” and says that creating this space is imbued with his desire to bring about change in people's daily lives.

A "gathering space" is not only a place of relaxation, but also a place where ideas can be born and the energy to make a new start.
