Introducing Nordic vintage furniture!

Kurt Olsen model 233 Arm Chair R412D223

Kurt Olsen was also a designer who was active during the so-called Golden Age of Danish furniture design from 1950 to 1960, a period that produced many furniture designers such as Finn Juhl and Wegner .

Although his design may seem similar to the carved beauty of Finn Juhl's work, his impression is slightly different. He is adept at using a technique called lathe turning to create round legs, and his medium-thick legs have a distinctive, organic form.

Also, personally, I think that the streamlined cross section of the structural part of the chair must have been difficult to manufacture, but it's a feature I like that shows the designer's attention to detail.

Although the furniture workshop no longer exists, it produced masterpieces such as the Boomerang chair designed by Erik Christiansen. As can be seen from the Boomerang chair, they were good at cutting.

I think chairs with arms are a great product for working for long periods of time. They are also great for reading.

Borge Mogensen Dining Table C18 R501K003

Next up we have the dining table by Børge Mogensen.

Mogensen is famous for his signature piece, the J39, and for being the first head of design at FDB Möbler. Mogensen has created masterpieces such as the Spanish chair and the Soborg chair , but as someone who hails from FDB Möbler, he has also worked on many designs for everyday items, from tables to storage boxes.

The C18 designed by Mogensen is the dining table by FDB Möbler mentioned above. C18 is also known as the Shaker table. As some of you may know, the J39 is also affectionately known as the Shaker chair. It can be said to be a work that inherited the spirit of redesign, which is the design theory of Kaare Klint, the father of Danish design. It was created with inspiration from the lifestyle of American Shakers. Later, the "C64", which is also sold by FDB Möbler and is still on sale, can also be said to be a work that redesigned C18. This is particularly evident in Wegner, but it is interesting to just follow the process of redesigning one's own work. There are various reasons for this, such as redesigning in line with lifestyles and making designs more precise.

There are two sizes in the series: W1800 and W1600, but this product is W1600. I think it has dimensions that allow you to sit comfortably even if there is someone next to you.

At first glance, it looks like a rugged design, but the T-shaped legs are chamfered with an exquisite R. The amber color that changes over time, unique to oak, is one of the charms of vintage furniture. I've written a blog that gives you an insight into Mogensen's personality, so if you're interested, please take a look.

Borge Mogensen Bookcase D-R412D239

Finally, we would like to introduce a bookcase, also by Børge Mogensen.

As mentioned above, Mogensen not only produces chairs but also various products related to daily life, and he also designs many storage boxes. The boxes that Mogensen made were revolutionary at the time. It may seem obvious in modern times, but he is said to have been a designer who reconsidered what to store in it.

When designing a home storage unit, Mogensen takes thorough measurements of every object found in an ordinary household - clothes, cutlery, needlework tools, pipes, writing utensils, folded shirts, racks of hangers, etc.
We calculated how long a rack would be needed for a woman, and how long would a man be, and then designed it.

It's a truly daunting task, but the storage furniture that is produced through this thorough work is very efficient and easy to use, as it can be divided up efficiently and combined in a variety of ways to suit your home.
As a system of storage furniture, it was installed in every home in Denmark.

Soborg Mobler is also a manufacturer that no longer exists, but it is famous for producing many of Mogensen's boxes, chairs such as the "soborg chair" , and chairs by Peter Witz, who designed the AX CHAIR.

About Børge Mogensen's furniture designs

There are many holes for the shelf dowels that fix the shelves in place, making this a bookcase that can be used for a variety of purposes. The design of the legs also has a touch of Mogensen.
