Storage tips for creating a comfortable life [Storage based on movement patterns]
Hello everyone. This is Okada from the Public Relations Department.
This is the third installment of a series in which we think about storage in your home.
This time, we will explain in detail the third point, "storage based on movement patterns"!
Last time, we introduced how to keep track of your belongings and some tips on how to store them neatly.
If you are planning to buy new furniture for such storage purposes, there are some things you should consider in advance.
It all comes down to what size furniture to have and how to arrange it!
If you don't keep these points in mind, the furniture you buy may end up being too big for your room, or you may end up placing it in the wrong place, making it difficult to use.
It would be such a shame not to be able to fully enjoy the charm of your furniture!
So this time, we will give you some tips on how to choose and arrange storage furniture.
Consider the flow of movement
When choosing and arranging your interior, it is important to consider the flow of people.
Here we consider two things: "operating dimensions" and "operating space."
"Operational dimensions" refers to the range of movement of a person's arms and legs, such as when sitting, crouching, reaching out, etc.
As shown in the photo above, these are the dimensions needed for a series of movements such as squatting, opening a door, and picking up an object.
This will give you an idea of how much space you need to use your furniture, which will help you decide how to arrange it.
The "operating space" is the space calculated by adjusting the size of the furniture to these "operating dimensions" and adding the space and room needed for work.
This will help you choose the perfect furniture, as you will know if the size of the furniture is suitable for the space you want to put it.
In other words, it is important to consider movement patterns when selecting and arranging furniture!
5 things you should know about choosing and arranging furniture
From here on, we will introduce 5 useful things to know about storage operating dimensions that are common in real life situations.
What size storage furniture should you choose for the space you have in your current room, and how should you arrange it to create a comfortable space?
Here are five dimensions to help you think about it!
① Carrying things...700mm
When carrying food, a width of at least 700 mm is required.
In the layout above, it would be safe to keep the dining table and the cupboard at least 700 mm apart.
For example, the Greenwich cupboard shown in the photo is 450 mm deep.
Therefore, if you want to place a cupboard next to your dining table, you will need about 1,200 mm of space next to the table to allow for some leeway.
② Sitting on a dining chair: 750 mm
When sitting on a dining chair, you need at least 750mm of space from the table.
If you are arranging your dining table and cupboard as shown in the photo above, you should leave a gap of at least 750 mm between them.
For example, the Greenwich kitchen cabinet shown in the photo is 450 mm deep.
It's a good idea to leave about 1,300 mm of space from the table to place the kitchen cabinet.
③Open the swing door...900mm
When placing a cabinet with hinged doors, you will need at least 900 mm of space to open it.
When arranging a sofa and easy chair together in a living room, for example, use these measurements as a reference to balance the arrangement.
For swing-out doors, it depends on the size of the door.
The above 900mm is the dimension when each door is 450mm wide.
When it comes to hinged doors, it is important to understand the dimensions of the furniture and consider the required space for movement.
④Open the drawer...1000mm
If the cabinet has drawers, you can use them without any hassle as long as you leave at least 1000mm of space for the drawer to be pulled out.
Using these dimensions as a reference, plan the layout of the items around it to make it easy to use and move around.
As you can see, cabinets with drawers take up a lot of space to open and close.
When buying new furniture, make sure you have enough space!
⑤Getting up from the bed: Width 650mm
To get up from bed, you need at least 500mm beside the bed.
When placing a chest of drawers or a side table to temporarily store small items next to your bed, use these operating dimensions as a reference when placing it.
A well-organized bedroom can make a big difference in how you feel when you wake up in the morning compared to one that isn't.
I believe that just changing the layout of your furniture can make you feel healthy both physically and mentally!
"Leisure" is tailored to the user and purpose of use
When thinking about the space you'll need to place furniture, it's important to leave some space in advance.
The amount of space varies from person to person and from person to person's purpose.
For example, actions such as taking things in and out, standing up, etc. are more strenuous for older people than for younger people.
We recommend that you leave yourself a little extra space.
Also, everyone's body size is different.
By leaving ample space for each person to use, you can create a more comfortable space that suits them.
The amount of space you have will also vary depending on what you plan to use the space for.
When it comes to relaxing in a living room, making it a more spacious space will make it a more relaxing space.
On the other hand, in the kitchen, where movement is the main focus, it is better to not leave too much space in order to be more efficient with housework.
Leaving space in a way that suits the purpose of use is also an important point in creating a comfortable space!
What do you think about storage that takes movement patterns into consideration?
In the next and final episode, we will talk about "storage that suits the situation."
Please look forward to it!
