[October 2021] Scandinavian vintage furniture has arrived at our Daikanyama store

It's definitely autumn now, and the weather is getting chilly. I can see the leaves starting to change color here and there.

In October, we received a large number of pieces by the master Scandinavian designer, Børge Mogensen. We would like to introduce these pieces as the main focus.

Borge Mogensen 3P Sofa D-R307D209

Børge Mogensen , a master of Danish design, has created many works throughout his life, including sofas. Among them, model 2218 is perhaps the most light-hearted design.

It has an exquisite balance of the clean straight lines that are typical of Mogensen and curves used here and there, and it has a size (width 1650mm) and lightness that you wouldn't expect from a three-seater chair.

The design may seem ordinary at first glance, but once you sit on it, you'll notice how sophisticated it is. Compared to the vintage Scandinavian sofas that are commonly available, it has a shallower depth and a lower backrest. It feels as if it was designed for Japan.

When you sit on it, you feel that it's at a just right angle, neither vertical nor reclining. You can concentrate on watching a movie, read without losing your posture, sit cross-legged, or lie down on it... It's a sofa that can be used in a variety of ways.

The six neatly arranged cushions are all the same size. They are not too thick or sink in, and the urethane feels firm and sturdy. You can alternate between them to prevent one part from becoming worn out.

The impeccable design is also evident on the back. One of the best things about this piece is that you can place it right in the middle of a room and enjoy its beauty.

Borge Mogensen model3251 Dining Chair D-R208D522A

Model 3251 is a simple canvas on a neat oak frame. It is one of the most difficult pieces to acquire. Moreover, this time the canvas is left as it is, only cleaned.

Because it is made of canvas, it sinks in a little, but it is more stable than you might imagine. I think this chair will dispel any worries you may have about whether a cloth chair is stable.

Another thing that really impressed me was the way the front legs are curved. The rear legs are straight, but only the underside of the seat is curved. Why?

When you sit down, you'll notice that the design is carefully calculated so that your legs don't hit the chair even if the seat sinks in. This is a beautiful feature that reflects Mogensen's philosophy of measuring people and objects and carefully calculating and designing each piece.

Borge Mogensen Cabinet D-906D500

This cabinet is manufactured by FDB Møbler and has a large presence and capacity. The entire cabinet is made of teak, and the shelves are newly manufactured from walnut.

The upper shelf is a movable shelf that can be hung on a dowel. There are holes every 30 mm, so you can adjust it to your desired height. The depth is 245 mm, so A4 size books and files can be stored.

The lower section is a combination of adjustable shelves and a tray. It is well-designed to store anything from drawings and art books to everyday items. The high storage capacity and the light feel of the different depths at the top and bottom are all examples of Mogensen's unique design philosophy.

Among them, my personal recommendation is the lower lock.

It's a handle type as shown in the picture, but you can turn it around and it becomes a handle. It's not particularly convenient, but the form that gives it a sense of the times is very cute, and it's a point that makes me feel a little excited every time I open it.

Borge Mogensen model2257 Easy Chair D-811D222C

Model 2257 is one of a series of furniture for nursing homes designed by Mogensen. It is a popular item that is often in stock at our store. It has been a long time since we last saw it.

It can be used as an easy chair as well as a dining chair with a SH of 445mm.

Particularly noteworthy is the ease with which you can stand up. The carefully calculated seat height, arm position, and back angle combine to make it surprisingly easy to stand up. It is an ageless design that can be used by people of all ages and genders.

The fabric was replaced with red "Clara2" from Kvadrat, a long-established Danish manufacturer. It's not a solid red, but rather a soft coral color that reminds you of flushed cheeks and autumn leaves.

These brighter colors are often seen as adventurous and avoided, but they go well with complementary green colors, so they are also recommended for homes surrounded by greenery or for those who enjoy plants indoors!

Borge Mogensen model2258 Easy Chair D-809D129A

This model 2258 is the high-back version of the model 2257 mentioned above. The basic design remains the same, but it has a moderately curved backrest and a headrest for more comfort.

When I (female, 162cm) sat down, the headrest was at a height that fit my neck perfectly. It is attached with a leather belt, so if you don't need it, you can remove it and use it.

Like the sofa, this series also has a very elegant appearance from the back. It will look good wherever you place it.

The fabric is the classic cotton-linen fabric "caleido" in a nuanced color called "grove." The pale green reminiscent of a grove of trees and the deep oak color go well together.

This month, we have selected mainly vintage Mogensen furniture, and we are also hosting a small-scale exhibition introducing the designer and showing his design drawings so that you can learn more about him.
