日本が江戸時代後期であった1866年、デンマークでは一般の人々が日常に不可欠な食品をより最適に入手出来るよう、地域神父クリスチャン・ソンネが流通の仕組みを構築し、FDB の前身となる協同組合を結成しました。

その後、デンマークのユトランド半島で日常生活協会を統括していたセブリン・ヨーエンセンは、ソンネが発足したような仕組みを持つ様々な分野の協同組合を一つに束ね、1896 年1 月1 日にFDB＝デンマーク生活協同組合連合会を設立しました。そして1942年にインテリア事業の角度から消費者の生活水準向上を目指し、FDB 内に家具部門が組織化されFDB モブラーは誕生しました。

「丈夫で、美しく、機能的、そして手軽な価格」という当時としては画期的で過酷な開発条件のもと、妥協のない商品開発と職人たちの巧みな技術力、北欧の歴史や地勢によって育まれた文化、その全てが必然性を持って混ざり合い生まれたFDB モブラーの家具は、デンマーク国民の暮らしをより豊かなものへと変え、それはまた人々の美意識をも向上させることに繋がりました。

デンマーク近代家具の父と称されるコーア・クリントに師事したボーエ・モーエンセンがFDB モブラーの初代企画デザイン担当責任者に就任し、ポール・M・ヴォルタが2 代目を務めました。ハンス・J・ウェグナーなど名だたるデザイナーがプロジェクトメンバーに名を連ね、数々の名作を世に送り出し、それらはその後に生まれたデンマーク家具の模範となり、今日目にする数々のデンマークデザインが生まれたのです。

Borge Mogensen(ボーエ・モーエンセン)

1914年デンマーク西部の都市オールボー生まれ、デンマーク王立アカデミー建築家でコーア・クリントに師事し彼の助手としてデザインを学び、マイスターの資格を得る。
同い年で親友のウェグナーとは時に協力し商品を作ったり、競い合うなど、公私ともに非常に親交が深かった。

1942年からはFDB(デンマーク生活協同組合家具部門)のプロダクトデザインマネージャーとして活動し、「庶民の為の家具を造ってほしい」というFDBからの依頼を受け、簡素なデザインとペーパーコードによる座面という家具の知識がなくても組み立てができる代表作であるJ39をデザインし、人々に職を確保させるという形でこの依頼を達成した。

1950年にFDBを退職、その後も自身の事務所を構え、FDBで培ったアメリカのシェーカー教の家具をリ・デザインした直線的で力強い家具を数多く制作している。特にストレージ系の家具に関しては多くデザインし、model145やキャビネットなどが数多く生産されている。

代表作に『J39』『ハンティングチェア』『スパニッシュチェア』などがある。
